The TC Electronic Grand Magus Distortion is an “organic tube-like distortion with tight bottom-end and natural sag”. Now this is another fun distortion pedal. The Grand Magus has a warmer, woolier tone than some of the lower-end distortion pedals that come to mind. If anything, on my humbucker equipped guitar the Grand Magus sounded a bit too dark at first when I had its Tone knob at its noon position. Why? Because you’re not getting a standard high-pass/low-pass tone stack here but a “high frequency contour” that adjusts tone on the treble side. You’re best starting with the Tone knob fully clock-wise and cutting back from there. When playing with single coils, cutting the Tone knob will tame the brightness a bit.
There’s a solid amount of good drive tones to be found with the Gain knob set high. If you roll it down to around noon or lower, you’re going to thin out the low-end a bit. This can be cool if a thinner, more brittle tone is what you’re going for, but generally, I’d recommend keeping the Gain set pretty high. I like it dimed as this lets you clean it up a little when cutting your guitar’s volume knob. I also like the Tone maxed even on my Strat as your guitar’s Tone knob can also be used to darken or brighten the overall sound. The Grand Magus is another solid beginner’s distortion pedal that can add some cool drive sounds in a pinch for any guitarist that needs some extra dirt. It’s another solid entry to the TC Electronic Smorgasbord of Tones.
